Abstract

The rapid development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the digital age requires Islamic Religious Education (IRE) to innovate in order to remain relevant. Textbook-centred learning has proved insufficient in fostering creativity, active participation, and meaningful interaction between teachers and students, and thus can no longer meet the needs of an adaptive, digitally aware generation. Therefore, this study outlines concrete strategies for integrating AI into IRE across all educational levels while upholding Islamic digital ethics. Using a descriptive qualitative approach based on literature review and limited field observation, the research finds that AI use in IRE remains minimal, with most teachers applying it only for evaluation purposes, such as online tests via Quizizz. However, AI has broad potential, such as recognising the pillars of faith and Islam in kindergarten, deepening the meaning of verses and their application in primary and junior high schools, appreciating the values of the Qur'an and Hadith in senior high schools, and strengthening reflective analysis in higher education. Thus, AI can be a supporting tool that enriches PAI learning methods as long as it is used in accordance with digital ethics.
