Psychological Conflict Dynamics in the Novel Hujan: Freud-Jung Comparative Analysis and Pedagogical Relevance
Abstract
This study was motivated by students’ lack of understanding of characters’ inner conflicts, as character analysis still focuses on actions and dialogue without examining psychological aspects. Freud viewed inner conflict through the id, ego, and superego, while Jung viewed it through the ego consciousness, personal unconscious, and collective unconscious. This study aims to analyze the similarities and differences in the inner conflicts of the characters Lail and Esok in the novel Hujan by Tere Liye and to examine their relevance in high school literature education. This study applies a qualitative-descriptive design with a literary psychology approach. Data were collected by reading, noting, coding, and grouping the data. The results of the study indicate that the similarities in inner conflict lie in the interaction between consciousness and the unconscious, which influences the characters’ emotions and behavior. The difference is that Freud emphasizes the reduction of anxiety through the ego, while Jung emphasizes the process toward self-integration. Its relevance is evident in the character material and characterization and aligns with the Learning Outcomes of Phase F of the Merdeka Curriculum, thereby supporting meaningful learning, critical thinking, and the strengthening of the Pancasila Student Profile.
